Character Background

• History: Wiki
• Core Relationships:

- Diluc: Kaeya and Diluc have a history. As children they were very close. Diluc's family took Kaeya in after he more or less showed up on their doorstep. Growing up and as young adults, Kaeya and Diluc were inseparable, Kaeya seemingly content to play shadow to the rising star of Diluc Ragnvindr. All that time though, Kaeya was keeping a secret. He hadn't wound up at the Ragnvindr's home accidentally. His father had left him there to serve as a spy for the cursed kingdom of Khaenri'ah. On the night that Diluc's father Crepus died, Kaeya confessed this truth to Diluc. Diluc, already drowning in grief and anger at the Knights of Favonius, responded with anger and violence and the two men fought, and it's possible Kaeya would have been killed if his Vision had not been gifted to him in that exact moment. That night was five years ago, and Diluc has since left Mondstadt and then returned. Despite the estrangement and the events of that terrible night, Kaeya often spends time with Diluc -- either at the bar that Diluc owns or on various adventures. He approaches Diluc directly when an incident involves fire similar to what backfired on his father, and Kaeya seems to still trust him, going so far as returning Diluc's Vision to him. He's also shown joked to Diluc that they're fated to be doomed together. It's clear that Diluc still matters to Kaeya very much.

- His Father: Kaeya's father deliberately abandoned him as a young child on the Ragnvindr's estate, hoping that his son would be taken in. It's specifically stated that Kaeya remembers it well, that his father told Kaeya that he was their last and only hope, that this was his chance, and that Kaeya remembers the hatred and hope in his expression. Since this night, Kaeya has not seen his father. But he has carried the weight of what his father set on his shoulders -- a lifetime of lies, lies that he's only revealed to Diluc. Because of this, some part of Kaeya is torn between the responsibility placed on him by his father and the kingdom he was born in and Mondstadt and the Ragnvindr's, the city and family that took him in and showed him kindness and support for most of his life.

- Crepus: Crepus Ragnvindr took Kaeya in when he was found as a child and raised him with warmth and kindness. There's no denying the respect and affection that Kaeya seems to have had for the man who'd acted as a surrogate father to him. Upon Crepus's death, especially given the circumstances of it and Crepus's use of the Delusion that backfired on him, Kaeya remarks about the fact that even someone such as Master Crepus could use such a dangerous, dark thing. Though he never speaks about it further, clearly Kaeya was affected by this enough that he later that night finally revealed the secret of who he is to Diluc.

- Traveler: Kaeya seems to enjoy the Traveler's company, quick to tease and flirt and offer to spend more time together. That said, aside from a few small peeks into his truer nature, he keeps up the usual façade of charm and wit that he presents to the public with the Traveler. He also doesn't hesitate to get up to his usual antics, weaving bald-faced lies about his grandfather being an infamous pirate. He seems to genuinely care for the Traveler and wants to be of help, but he's also not afraid to place the Traveler in danger either, if he believes it will serve his purposes.

- Jean: Jean and Kaeya appear to have a relationship of mutual trust. Kaeya puts in a lot of work to help plan a party for Jean, though goes through even more work to make it seem as if he had nothing to do it it, too shy to really show quite that emotion. Jean seems aware of the fact that Kaeya's methods aren't always the most orthodox or savory, but she entrusts him with responsibilities and missions and lets him act as he sees fit.

- Klee: Kaeya seems to enjoy causing mischief with and for Klee. He's one of the people who is lured out to the Golden Apple Archipelago by Klee's absent mother in order to create a special party for the young girl. Kaeya also has told Klee (and other children) stories about monsters and other spooky things that seem to have the effect that he desires. In any case, he cares for her and seems to enjoy letting his playful side out.

- Knights of Favonius: Kaeya is the Cavalry Captain of the Knights of Favonius. As such he has a lot of responsibility. Though some see him as too laid back and occasionally lazy, he actually cares very much for his duty of protection of Mondstadt and its citizens. He just has his own methods. He's shown that he's not always easy to work with -- ditching Amber when they'd been instructed to work together. He also doesn't hesitate to put his fellow knights in danger if that's the best way he sees to accomplish their ends, though part of that may be his faith in his fellow knights to handle themselves. He seems friendly with Lisa (and with a healthy dose of fear of her) and is social enough that he gets along with most people decently well.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:

Kaeya is clever. There's no mistaking that Kaeya almost always is paying more attention and thinking more deeply than he often lets on. Though he hides behind friendly smiles and chatter, he is very skilled at tracking down leads and information. He walks a morally ambiguous line sometimes at times with the fact that some of his sources are the people he as a knight probably ought to be actively working against. He's also shown himself to be exceptionally perceptive. During the black fire incident, he realizes that the flames are similar to what happened when Master Crepus died and immediately approaches Diluc about it, deliberately dodging Amber's assistance in order to keep that information between the two of them. He also figures out the true source of the attack and comes up with a plan with Diluc to deal with the situation and the Fatui. Though their relationship has been strained, he still works well with Diluc and the other man seems to at least trust in his plan even if he no longer trusts Kaeya as a person.

Kaeya is charming. Kaeya is popular within Mondstadt, among the knights and citizenry alike. Apparently the older generation are very fond of him and he's considered a catch of a potential grand-son-in-law. He uses this charm and friendliness when he interacts with most everyone. When he first meets the Traveler, he's eager to get to know about the new "honorary knight" and to charm the Traveler into helping him with some of his errands. Some people have seen through this charm on occasion, with Rosaria in particular noting that when he drinks, some of Kaeya's charm and facade falls a little. But in general, the face that Kaeya presents to everyone, his fellow knights and even the Fatui delegation in the city, is one of easy charm and humor, a playfulness that also helps him get along with Klee and get the little girl into mischief.

Kaeya is dedicated. Despite how laidback and borderline lazy Kaeya can come off as, he is very dedicated. The Acting Grandmaster of the Knights, Jean, trusts Kaeya and relies on him as one of her main allies within the knights. Kaeya has shown that he cares for Jean as well, in performing his duties but also in making sure that Jean takes some time off -- for parties or for her health. He also will do whatever he needs to do to achieve his missions, and though sometimes his means can be questionable, he's focused enough on the ends that he's willing to make those decisions and take those chances. He's a Knight of Favonius, and despite the conflicting loyalties that lie deep inside him he fights hard to protect the city from monsters and other threats without hesitation.

Kaeya cares. Though he keeps many people at arm's length with his easygoing playful act, the people that Kaeya allows close he genuinely cares for. He's proven his concern and dedication to Jean and the Knights. He's also shown much of this in his younger life with his support of Diluc. The two were an inseparable team in many ways, and even after the rift between them, Kaeya is the one who returns Diluc's Vision to him. Kaeys is also aware of Diluc's identity as the Darknight hero and keeps that information to himself. Despite having been left in Mondstadt as an agent of Khaenri'ah, he's come to genuinely care about the city that he's called home and the people in it. Kaeya also has no patience for people who want to cause harm to the innocent, especially families and children

(2+) Negative Experiences:

Kaeya is a liar. The moment that Kaeya's father abandoned him to the Ragnvindr's care, he left Kaeya to a life of lies. Aside from his confession to Diluc on the night that Crepus died, no one knows that Kaeya was left in Mondstadt as a Khaenri'ah agent. His entire life in Mondstadt, in this sense, has been a lie. He's aware of this very keenly, and feels some guilt over it. He also lies to himself in many ways, trying not to think about the fact that the day may come where he might be called on to choose either Mondstadt or Khaenri'ah. Kaeya also lies to himself that this doesn't bother him. In a much sillier nature, Kaeya is skilled at telling absolutely absurd lies for his own amusement and motivations -- such as telling the Traveler and Paimon that he's descended from pirates and inherited his eyepatch from his pirate grandfather. That's not how genetics work, Kaeya. He continues this ridiculous story when he finds himself in the Golden Apple Archipelago, citing treasure and his pirate ancestry as the reason he's there.

Kaeya is manipulative. Kaeya is very skilled at setting up situations that put people under immense pressure -- friend and foe alike. He'll use it as a strategy for battle and also to test how the people he considers friends and allies act when they're challenged in such a way. He uses his manipulation skills to prompt the Traveler and Paimon into helping him complete Jean's tasks and also in arranging a party for the overworked acting Grand Master, allowing them to take the credit for the celebration. Kaeya also uses manipulation in his line of work, having a network of sources that he keeps, even though some of them are criminals that he probably ought to deal with as a Knight. Ends often justify means in Kaeya's eyes, and he's not afraid to arrange situations and stretch truth to turn events to the course he wants them to take.

Kaeya is lonely. When he was a small child, Kaeya was abandoned by his father. Now, his father had a reason for it, but the weight of that reason was heaped upon the small child left in a strange land. For a while he found a home with the Ragnvindrs who welcomed him warmly and cared for him, but even in those days, when he lived with Master Crepus and Diluc, he carried that loneliness with him since he knew the truth of who he was when no one else did. After Master Crepus's death and his battle with Diluc, that loneliness only grew. He lost the people he was closest to. Since then, though Kaeya is very sociable and friendly, often seen in bars and taverns, there doesn't seem to be anyone who is genuinely close to him. He seldom if ever lets down his public mask. Maybe it's a defense mechanism, since he's quite literally been burned before. But despite his best attempts to keep it hidden, the Traveler has noted that there is an obvious loneliness in Kaeya, even if the young cavalry captain won't admit it.

Kaeya is torn. Kaeya has spent most of his life with an inner conflict between being the last hope of the land of his birth, Khaenri'ah, and his adopted homeland of Mondstadt. He's torn between following the path his father set him on and being loyal and true to the people and city that took him in so willingly and completely. He doesn't know how he's supposed to make that choice, and some part of him doesn't want to.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers: Kaeya's powers come from his Cryo Vision. As such he can control and create ice, using it in everything from freezing enemies to creating ice bridges across water. As a Coldblood, this will feed directly into his Blood Type as complimenting to his canon powers -- but also confuse him very much when there's also fire involved. He's also canonly a talented swordsman, and he often uses his Cryo powers in conjunction with his weapon.

• Blood Type: Coldblood
• Omen: A peacock, all white (though in certain lights some of its feathers appear to be shades of a pale icy blue.)
• Blessed Day: October 30th - A total headcanon date, but let's call it the first time he thought of the Ragnvindr house as home, a few months after that late summer evening he was left there by his father.
• Patron Pthumerian: Cloverfield
• Blood Power Manifestation: Kaeya's blood powers will manifest similarly to how his Vision powers manifest, the ability to manipulate and control ice. He's also going to be able to tap into creating and controlling fire as well, once he figures it out. His control over this will be much less until he has some practice and experience under his belt, since it's the exact opposite of what he's used to. His use of fire will, regardless, remain weaker than his ice powers.
